Fleur de Sel

Print
"Fleur de sel – pristine salt crystals harvested from marshes along the southern coast of Brittany, in western France – is one of the world's most sought-after salts. It delivers a burst of flavor and crunch when sprinkled on a finished dish, be that a pork chop or a simple omelette." –The Editors, from the 2009 edition of the SAVEUR 100, Issue #117

The salt: excellent; The price: NOT. the supplier Saveur links you to sells it for $11.25--a 163% markup!! That retail price: more than 2-1/2 times as high as the retail price in a supermarket here in France where it costs 3.25 euros, about 4.25$US. Nothing justifies extortionate prices charged by boutique food shops in the US. Il Formaggio in Cambridge MA does the same thing with only mid-grade olive oils from France, which they think justify similar or greater mark-ups. I'm always surprised that more people don't object. These retailers really know their market... people with more money than common sense. There are equally good products from other sources for a lot less. Quelle honte!

thanks for your tip. i too have been frustrated and amazed at the prices offered on imported goods and services at 'gourmet' outlets and websites. a quick google search led me to a supplier that offers the above mentioned salt for less than $6.50. always always always check around and compare prices. quality needn't be unaffordable.

The above comment took away all my enthusiasm for going through this website, let alone ordering anything...
