Mango’s Best Friend

Print Save Article
Mango Splitter Credit: OXO
I've been mango shy ever since I did a better job at slicing my finger than at slicing a mango several years ago (truth be told, I ended up in the ER). So, I was thrilled to learn about OXO's Good Grips Mango Splitter, a circular plastic gadget with stainless-steel blades in the middle that you push down to remove the seed and cut the fruit in half. You still need to scrape the fruit from the peel, but that part's easy. In just a few minutes, you'll have enough peeled fruit to make SAVEUR's mango–lime ice or sticky rice with mangoes.

cool, I guess, but doesn't a knife work just fine?

Seems a shame to abandon the thrill of handling that slippery mango pit while armed with a sharp knive, but so much safer.
Yet it looks like it leaves a lot on the pit?

It does leave a little fruit around the pit, but that part's much easier to cut off.

I have one of these and it is great! There is a little meat left around the pit and on the skin but that is simple to remove with a small paring knife. I eat a lot more mango that I used thanks to this gadget.

I love to wonder inside my local kitchen stores or supermarkets to discover new tools. I bought this one and every time I try to use it I have issues. Either the fruit is squished or the blades do not pierce the skin. I go back to the original tool - the simple knife.I keep thinking that the money I spend on this unused collection of tools may one day bring a few laughs.
