For dinner that night, Becky offered to make short ribs. I'd told her that I'd never been able to cook them well and her cookbook, the Washington Local and Seasonal Cookbook has a recipe that has two of my favorite ingredients (along with the short ribs): coffee and chocolate. Can you really go wrong with coffee and chocolate? I didn't think so.

WOW. If this is the best of the web, I am saddened. I will stick with Epicurious. Is ONE WHOLE CUP of BITTER CHOCOLATE a TYPO??? The Recipe was very good prior to the chocolate. Had I not added it, we would have enjoyed it. My family threw it out and is now making frozed pizza...something that NEVER happens in my home. YES...it's that bad. SAVE YOUR MONEY.

I don't know with Oggie is talking about, but I made this too and it came out perfect.

Did you make any substitutions to the recipe?

I am the author of this recipe. One cup of chocolate (70% cacao)is not a typo. However there is a marked difference between baking chocolate and a 70% cacao choclate bar.

This recips has been tested many times by many people and was raved about every time. I am very sorry that Oggiedog wasn't happy with it but it has been wonderful every time I've had it (including once made by the original cookbook author).

WOW - I love short ribs - and make them often - the addition of coffee and chocolate had my taste buds singing. And this did not disappoint! Well Done cooklocal. This will be one of my winter staples with garlic smashed potatoes! Life doesn't get much better - UNLESS there is bacon invovled!!! =)
