My God! Tried this recipe and couldn't believe that it captures a taste that I once, only once had of a perfect meatloaf ever so many years ago! Proust was so right! It brought back a whole part of my life that had slipped away for years. I am so happy to have this recipe again and have this tasty and juicy dish to offer my friends and family when I wish to share coziness and hearty, good food.
Old-Fashioned Meat Loaf
Topping meatloaf with bacon while cooking keeps it moist and imparts a smoky flavor.

FROM THE
RECIPE:
I made an old-fashioned meatloaf, with good ol' Heinz ketchup, store-bought breadcrumbs, and locally smoked bacon. Because you see, when I say old-fashioned, I mean it. There was a butcher shop involved. And ground beef made from the cattle that graze out back. The vegetables were from the local farmer markets, the eggs from our friends Carla and Harry; only the ketchup and breadcrumbs were, well, nationally produced (is that what we call things that aren't local?).

I absolutely HATE the new Saveur webpage recipes. I can never find the frickin recipes, just a bunch of comments and talk. I WANT RECIPES!!!!

I agree with Ms. Proffitt....the new web pages need lots of work. They are not user friendly, take too much computer memory to move from page to page (ie...are slow as Christmas...if they open at all) and are certainly make me consider dropping this whole thing. You produce a fantastic magazine...now get someone to clean up this web site..or stop sending it out to us.

I AGREE!!! I ABSOLUTELY HATE THE NEW SAVEUR WEBPAGES. I'm sure the great recipes are there but half the time they won't load and half the time it just take too dern long to wait around for the pages to load. I'm not needing instant -- but TODAY would be nice!!!!! I'd just like the old format back even if it wasn't as fluffy and pretty. Fluffy and pretty may look great but they bite as far as this new format goes!! BRING BACK THE OLD OR FIX THE NEW WEBSITE!!!

I have an idea get a computer that is more up to date.

How can i rate it when i can not get it to open?

Not a problem opening up but any recipe that is not sourced from saveur doesn't have a printable version, pain. Also why can't we sort our saved recipes, I don't save that many because they are hard to look through to find what you want. Meat loaf looks good though.

The reason why most of the recipes are not printable is because they are taken from different food bloggers. If you want to print them out, you should copy the recipes by highlighting them and pasting them on a blank word document. You may edit out the parts that you do not want to print. You may also copy and paste the photos into the recipe and then print them out. It is actually quite simple to do.

The Meatloaf is great. People reviewing the web site's format ... where they should be reviewing the recipe ...not so great! >>> ....I agree with the sentiment....it does need improvement... but please use the correct forum!

I had been using an old, tried & true recipe for meatloaf, for over 30 years. So, I tried something new. I say, "Out with the old, in with the new." This recipe is the best comfort food I have ever had. Thank you, Saveur!

Made this recipe last evening with turkey instead of the beef. Was concerned that the texture woulod be too soft, but was surprised at how it held together and tasted better than any ground turkey recipe that I've made thus far. Sauteeing the mirepoix was definitely important for taste. Used Hatfield bacon as the topping. Really good dish!
