There may be no better summer dish than ceviche. It's fresh, flavorful, and can be made in minutes. Peru is generally recognized as the birthplace of ceviche, though Ecuadoreans might have something to say about that. If you want a taste of the real thing, Mo-Chica, chef Ricardo Zarate's new spot in downtown LA, serves some of the best ceviche north of Lima.

Daniel Milder lives in Los Angeles and has contributed articles and videos to Good Magazine, Men's Journal, and Kenneth Cole's Awearness Blog.

Daniel: We totally agree Mo Chica has one of the best ceviche in LA. Sometimes they have a special, scallops and uni ceviche--simply mind blowing so ask if they have it. They also started a special 4 course tasting menu for $25, but it was more like 5 items when we went to the inaugural tasting--it's not daily and requires a reservation, so call ahead. It was the most refined and delicious tasting we've ever had for an unheard of amount.

I disagree. Mo-Chica is ok, but not great & definitely not outstanding. Unfortunately LA is filled with mediocre Peruvian restaurants. We need Gaston Acurio to save our city! Mo-Chica delivers a mild tasting cebiche, but has a long way to go... it seems the chef is scared to use aji! Some of the other dishes at Mo-Chica deserve praise (e.g. Lomo Saltado), but what kills me about this place is the sloppy service - serving meals on chipped dishes, no re-filling of drinks & bringing out one's persons dishes before others at the same table. Time for them to take a trip back to Lima to learn a thing or two (or at least they should visit La Mar in San Francisco)...
