MAKES ABOUT 3 1/2 CUPS

This recipe is based on one in Thoroughly Modern Milkshakes (Norton, 2009) by Adam Ried.

1/2 cup cold milk
1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tbsp. malted milk powder,
   such as Horlicks
4 cups caramel, caramel swirl,
or dulce de leche ice cream

1. Put milk, vanilla, and malted milk powder into a blender and blend until combined. Add ice cream and blend, pausing once or twice to mash the mixture with a rubber spatula, until mixture is smooth and creamy, about 45 seconds. Pour milk shake into 2 chilled glasses.

Don't bother. The results will depend solely on the quality of your ice cream choice because there is so little malt and vanilla in the drink that they add nothing. And 3 1/2 cups? Come on. Was this just enough of a change from "1 pint" to make this an original recipe? For shame to all involved.

I live upstate NY. Does ANYONE know where I can purchase any decent malted powder (except online)?

A recipe printed in the mid-80s is a generation or two old. Updates to or revivals of old foodways are a welcome thing in my book; it keeps those very ideas and recipes alive. Malteds are not well known to the younger generation; and using dulce de leche as a caramel alternative would certainly rate as a new twist on an old idea!

Similar recipe appeared in Gourmet mid-80's as 'Oh what a beautiful malted'. See also 'Strawberry Blond". So many food ideas touted as new are NOT.
