MAKES 1

London-based fashion journalists used to order this old-style cocktail at the Blue Bar of New York's famed Algonquin Hotel.

1 small egg white
1 tbsp. fine sugar
1 cup fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 oz. gin
3/4 oz. Cointreau
1/3 tsp. sugar

1. Make a sour mix by combining egg white and sugar with lemon juice.

2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add 1 1/2 oz. sour mix, gin, Cointreau, and sugar. Shake vigorously, then pour into a chilled cocktail glass.

one cup of lemon juice seems like a lot. Maybe it was the more standard 1T sugar to 1 oz lemon juice?
