
Normally I'm fervently praying to make flights, not miss them, but as I prepared to board a plane home from Kahului Airport in Maui, Hawaii, I found myself hoping I wouldn't make it through the security checkpoint in time to leave. The Four Seasons resort in Wailea, Maui, is the kind of place that seems impossible to return from. The surroundings alone are enough to spoil you rotten — an ocean that's so warm and calm in the morning it's like taking a dip in a swimming pool; near-constant sun and 85-degree weather; the soothing sounds of waves splashing against black lava rock. Add to that fantastic restaurants, poolside massages, swim-up bars, and impeccable service, and returning to a normal life where you have to do your own laundry and clean up after yourself seems inconceivable — cruel, even.
