The now-essential ingredient of sweetened condensed milk was first incorporated into this potent summer cooler in the mid-twentieth century, when the commissaries of American military bases in Thailand were selling the thick, concentrated treat. Locals quickly embraced it, adding the stuff to both iced coffee and tea, making them luxuriously sweet.
- 1 cup ground coffee
- 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 3⁄4 cup milk
- Brew coffee with 4 cups water in your coffee machine to produce 4 cups very strong coffee. Place in the refrigerator until chilled. In a small bowl, stir together both milks until smooth; refrigerate until chilled.
- When ready to serve, fill 4 tall glasses with ice and divide coffee among glasses; pour over milk mixture and serve.
