Mixstrology: Aquarius

Welcome to Mixstrology, SAVEUR's monthly series where astrologer/bartender Patricia Clark Hippolyte provides a cocktail prescription for each sign of the zodiac. This month: Aquarius.

With a laser-beam wit, the objective, unaffected, and out-of-the-box Aquarius is a true utopian dreamer. Though with your cool, detached attitude, you’re often hard to read at first glance, on further inspection, your progressive logic—or perhaps your quirky choice of dress or those icy blue eyes—can give you away. As to your projects, you are co-ruled by Saturn and Uranus. Saturn gives focus and structure to the revolutionary, unpredictable actions of Uranus, so between the two, you can really get things done. This drink is smooth, cool, and pleasantly refreshing, not unlike your demeanor, and the once-banned absinthe gives it a touch of Uranian rebelliousness.

As for the rest of the zodiac, try these sign-appropriate variations:

Aries

Your chart is lit up like a pinball machine, so you’re going to feel pressured in a number of ways. Take advantage of Jupiter’s indulgent energies to help take off the edge off of some of the other more challenging transits. Balance is key: Make this drink with equal parts gin and absinthe and a dash of orange bitters.

Taurus

Saturn has slowed you down, keeping you focused and working harder. The beauty of Saturn is that he rewards hard work. Regroup, restructure, and relax: Try absinthe, white crème de cacao, coconut milk, and black sambuca.

Cancer

Family or home issues may be causing stress. Hopefully, the Aquarius sun will offer objective thinking, giving your emotions a slight reprieve. You may feel muddled in the meantime, so go with it: Muddle cucumber and kiwi, sweet Cancer, and add absinthe, simple syrup, and club soda.

Leo

Career issues should be working themselves out now, and all your hard labors seem to have been setting you up for success because Saturn will transition into Sagittarius at the end of this year, giving your sun a very supportive aspect. Lose the mint and simple syrup, add orgeat syrup and half & half, and throw yourself a party with an absinthe suissesse.

Virgo

As Pluto slowly tortures you and the other cardinal signs (Aries, Libra, and Capricorn), it’s giving you the resilience to power through your chores. Just watch out for misunderstandings in early February when Mercury goes retrograde. Take it clean and cold: absinthe, anisette, cold water, and bitters served straight up.

Libra

I need not tell you of the pummeling that you are receiving from Pluto, but take this time to enjoy an extra boost of energy from Mars to help soften the blow. Drink it like that legendary pugilistic writer, Ernest Hemingway: one part absinthe, four parts champagne.

Scorpio

With Saturn nagging you, keep to your daily routine, and stick to your comfort zone; this transit won't last forever—it just feels like it will. You need powerful medicine: Muddle blackberries and mint and add rye, absinthe, lemon juice, and tonic.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius, as with your polar opposite, Gemini, positive aspects are keeping you energized and motivated. It’s a great time to wrap old projects and start new ones. Strike a classic pose: gin with dashes of absinthe and dry vermouth.

Capricorn

With your chart pulling you in many directions, I say indulge in that Venus-Jupiter opposition and get a little carefree. Just think Bacchus meets Aphrodite. Try brandy, absinthe, and dry vermouth, topped with a flaming orange peel.

Gemini

I’m excited for you. You have loads of energetic planetary support this month: The Sun, Mercury, and Mars are all in the air signs, and Uranus is in Aries. Mentally and physically charged, you can have fun with this; just don’t get too carried away. Shake up gin, limoncello, absinthe, and the bitters of your choice.

Pisces

You’re one of the more fortunate signs these days; Pluto’s giving you the wherewithal to follow through on your plans, and Jupiter is lending you some luck. You’ll be feeling sunny, so get a bit tropical and add some citrus: gin, absinthe, simple syrup, mint, and lime juice.
