Date Shake

Supposedly invented in the 1930s by a California date farmer, date shakes are a popular drink at roadside stands in the Coachella Valley. This recipe is from Oasis Date Gardens, which serves up to 300 shakes a day.

1 cup dates, such as deglet noor or
   (for a more intense date flavor) medjool
1 cup milk
2 cups quality vanilla ice cream

1. Pit and chop dates.

2. Put dates and milk into jar of a blender and purée until smooth. Add ice cream and purée again. Divide shake between 2 tall Styrofoam cups or glasses.

Styrofoam cups? I love a good date shake, but come on Saveur, how about thinking of the environment? Super disappointed that you're encouraging their use.
