Menu: A Venetian Cocktail Party

A Venetian tradition, cicheti are small bites enjoyed as snacks and appetizers in wine bars, or bacari, all over the city. With plates of grilled polenta, stuffed zucchini and cherry peppers, sweet and sour sardines, and more, this menu of small plates works just as well for a large cocktail party as it does for a casual get-together with a few friends. To drink, the classic Italian "spriss" is light and restorative and fun, just like cicheti are.

More About This Menu

  1. For even more cicheti ideas, check out all the recipes in the collection.

  2. Do some prep the day before to streamline cooking—the cod mousse can be made ahead, and both the sardines and the stuffed peppers need to marinate for several hours before serving.

  3. This menu is great for a cocktail party or other event where you're only serving hors d'oeuvres or small plates. To turn it into more of a meal, pair with a green salad and try a granita or some baci di dama for dessert.

  4. The area around Venice has lots of great wine to offer. Prosecco is a classic choice and makes a great aperitif, but for something a bit different, one of our favorite wines to pair with the city's many dishes is the complex little white known as soave.
