MATT TAYLOR-GROSS

Supposedly invented in the 1930s by a California date farmer, date shakes are a popular drink at roadside stands in the Coachella Valley. This recipe is from Oasis Date Gardens, which serves up to 300 shakes a day.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dates, such as deglet noor or (for a more intense date flavor) medjool
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups quality vanilla ice cream

Instructions

Step 1

Pit and chop dates.

Step 2

Put dates and milk into jar of a blender and purée until smooth. Add ice cream and purée again. Divide shake between 2 tall Styrofoam cups or glasses.
