Tree-shaped sugar cookies, adapted from an old standby, Betty Crocker's Picture Cookbook, epitomize a classic American Christmas.

Yield: makes 18 Cookies


  • <sup>2</sup>⁄<sub>3</sub> cup honey
  • <sup>1</sup>⁄<sub>3</sub> cup shortening
  • <sup>1</sup>⁄<sub>3</sub> cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 <sup>3</sup>⁄<sub>4</sub> cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 tsp. lemon extract
  • 40 drops green food coloring


  1. Using an electric mixer, combine honey, shortening, sugar, and egg. Slowly add flour, baking soda, salt, and lemon extract. Add food coloring. Refrigerate dough 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oven to 375°. Roll out into a 9” circle about ¼” thick. Cut into trees, re-rolling scraps to make more cookies; bake 8-10 minutes.
